Drug charge defence begins with understanding the allegation. A possession case and a trafficking case may raise different questions about the events, the records, and the proposed legal work. Describe the charge as it appears on your documents, rather than relying on what you remember being told.
Our Calgary drug lawyers can discuss the police interaction, the available disclosure, and the current court process. A consultation is an opportunity to explain your priorities and identify the information needed for an individual assessment. An initial inquiry is not a prediction about the outcome.
If the drug charge is connected to other allegations, release conditions, or a pending appearance, include those details in your first conversation. The legal team needs the whole picture to discuss the appropriate next step. Keep your original records and identify the dates that are already scheduled.
Tell the team what substance is alleged, where the incident took place, and what charge appears in the paperwork. A drug possession consultation starts with the allegation and your account, then identifies the information that needs review.
A drug trafficking allegation may involve several events or types of records. Bring the complete charge documents and explain whether there are related allegations. The scope of the defence must be discussed in light of the particular circumstances.
Describe the police interaction in a clear timeline. Identify whether the allegation followed a vehicle stop, a search of a location, or another encounter. Your drug lawyer can discuss the questions raised by the circumstances and available records.
Tell the legal team whether you have received disclosure and how it was provided. Avoid editing original messages or documents. The consultation can identify which records are available and what further information may be needed.
Have your current release paperwork available. Explain any practical issue affecting work, travel, or contact with another person so it can be discussed alongside the drug charge. Do not assume a pending inquiry changes existing conditions.
Include the next appearance date in your request. The team can discuss availability and the proposed next procedural step. An online request is not confirmation that a lawyer will attend court on your behalf.
YOUR PRACTICE GUIDE
A drug case deserves more than a label. The substance alleged, the place it was found, the police interaction, and the evidence connecting a person to it all matter. These are some of the questions to organize before a detailed review of your Calgary drug charge.
A charge sheet is the starting point for identifying the offence. Section 4 of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act addresses possession of specified controlled substances. Section 5 separately addresses trafficking and possession for the purpose of trafficking. Those are different allegations; a conversation about a drug case should identify which provision is actually charged.
Do not rely only on a verbal description such as “drug charges.” Keep every page of the police and court paperwork. Note whether there are multiple counts, other accused people, or related allegations. A lawyer can organize the issues around the charge as filed and the evidence available, rather than assumptions about what the police meant.
A useful factual timeline separates what you personally saw from what someone later told you. Where was the substance allegedly located? Who was in the vehicle, room, or residence? Which belongings were yours? What did the officers say had been found, and when did you learn that? These details help frame the questions for a review of the evidence.
Write down places, dates, and people without trying to turn the notes into a defence argument. Mark anything you are uncertain about. A consultation is more useful when the lawyer can distinguish a direct recollection from an inference or a second-hand account. The initial website form needs only a brief description; detailed discussion belongs in the appropriate conversation with counsel.
Describe the encounter in sequence: the initial contact, any detention or arrest, a search, what was said about the reason for it, and what happened afterwards. Identify whether officers entered a home, searched a vehicle, looked through belongings, or examined a device. Keep any warrant or receipt that was provided.
The purpose of collecting these facts is to let a lawyer examine the actual circumstances. The presence of a search does not by itself establish a defence or determine the result. Equally, a short description of a search cannot answer every question about police authority. Bring the records and explain what you remember so the review can address the encounter that actually occurred.
REQUEST A CONSULTATIONTell the team whether you have received disclosure and how it was delivered. A police narrative, photographs, recordings, messages, laboratory material, and witness accounts can raise different questions. Preserve the package in its original form, including file names and the correspondence that accompanied it. Let counsel identify what is present and what further information may be needed.
A drug defence plan is not a conclusion reached from a headline or the amount allegedly found. It develops through a review of the prosecution material and your instructions. If you have not received the material yet, say so. A first consultation can still identify the stage of the case, upcoming dates, and the work that would be involved in a fuller review.
Your next court appearance and your release documents are separate practical priorities. Bring the complete document, including any attachments. Highlight restrictions that affect your home, work, travel, or contact with other people. Explain a specific difficulty rather than assuming a condition can simply be disregarded.
Alberta provides Justice of the Peace bail hearings for accused people who are not released by police. If custody or a bail hearing is the immediate issue, identify that clearly when calling. A general online inquiry should not be treated as confirmation that counsel is attending a hearing. Ask the office about availability and the arrangements needed for that particular proceeding.
An allegation can also raise questions about a job, professional obligations, immigration status, or travel plans. Tell your lawyer which concerns actually apply to you, and identify any letter, application, or deadline connected to them. That helps define whether the criminal case needs to be considered alongside another area of advice.
Avoid assuming that a result described online will have the same effect in your circumstances. A lawyer needs the exact charge, your relevant history, and the context of the other process. The discussion can identify which issues fall within the proposed criminal retainer and whether additional advice is needed. Clear scope matters when more than one legal process is involved.
REQUEST A CONSULTATIONBefore retaining a Calgary drug lawyer, ask what the initial work covers. Is the proposed engagement for a particular appearance, a disclosure review, negotiations, or representation through a trial? What information must be obtained first? Who will be your contact for scheduling and document requests?
Ask how fees and disbursements will be explained and what would require a further agreement. A clear conversation about scope helps you understand the work being proposed. This website does not advertise a fixed result or a universal fee. The team can discuss an arrangement after identifying the allegation and the stage of your case.

REQUEST A CONSULTATIONGive the team a short account of what has happened. Identify your drug offences concern and the question you want to discuss. Tell us about any other proceeding or transaction connected to the request so the context is understood.
Have your original documents and relevant correspondence available. Charge and release documents, Upcoming court dates, A brief timeline of the events, Any correspondence about your case can provide a useful starting point. The team can tell you what further material may be needed for an individual review.
Ask about availability, the proposed work, and the terms of representation. A consultation request is the beginning of a conversation. The legal team will need to agree the scope before an inquiry becomes an engagement.
